Pigeon Valley is an easy 3.5 km, roughly 90-minute walk between Uchisar and Goreme in Cappadocia, passing fairy chimneys and rock-cut dovecotes. Rated 1 of 5 difficulty, it suits families. Reach it by dolmus or taxi between the towns; wear proper shoes and carry water.
The signposted trail between Uchisar and Goreme is about 3.5 km and takes roughly 90 minutes, or 1.5 to 2 hours with photo stops. It is rated 1 out of 5 for difficulty, making it an easy walk suitable for families and casual hikers, with only a few narrow or uneven sections and no real climbing.
Most people start at the Uchisar end and walk downhill to Goreme. You can reach Uchisar from Goreme by the regular dolmus (shared minibus) that loops through Goreme, Uchisar, Nevsehir, and Avanos during the day, or by a short taxi. Ending in Goreme is handy since most hotels and buses are based there. From Nevsehir, take a dolmus to Goreme first, then connect to Uchisar.
You walk beneath tall rose- and cream-colored rock formations, past small vineyards and fruit trees, and under countless dovecotes carved into the cliffs, which give the valley its name. Highlights include the blue-beaded wishing tree near the Uchisar side and excellent framed views of Uchisar Castle. It is quieter and more intimate than the busier Rose or Red valleys.
Early morning or late afternoon is best, when the light is soft and temperatures are comfortable; the golden hour before sunset looks stunning against the pale cliffs. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons. Avoid the exposed midday sun in summer, and take care in winter when shaded spots can be muddy or icy.
Wear proper walking or trail shoes, since the ground is dusty, rocky, and sometimes slippery. Carry water because facilities inside the valley are limited, though there are cafes at both ends. Download an offline map, as a few unmarked side trails branch off the main path. There is no entrance fee. Bring a hat, sunscreen, and a camera, respect the private gardens, and take your rubbish with you.
